Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a high-performance polymer that plays a vital role in the medical field due to its unique physical and chemical properties. First used in a medical device in the 1950s, PTFE has become an indispensable material in the field of biomedical applications.

PTFE is highly favored in the medical industry because of its multiple outstanding properties. Foremost is its excellent biocompatibility; the material is non-toxic, odorless, and safe, allowing for long-term implantation in the human body without causing adverse reactions. Furthermore, PTFE possesses the lowest coefficient of friction (approximately 0.05-0.10) among all polymers, and its superior self-lubricating properties enable smoother navigation of medical devices within the body. It also exhibits chemical inertness, resisting almost all chemical reactions and withstanding strong acids, alkalis, and organic solvents. Additionally, its properties of high/low temperature resistance, anti-adhesion, and electrical insulation lay a solid foundation for its diverse applications in the medical field.

Based on these characteristics, PTFE has a wide range of applications in the medical field, including:

  • Vascular Interventional Devices: Used as an inner liner for catheters and guidewires, its extremely low friction ensures the smooth passage of balloons, stents, and other devices. ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) is also commonly used in vascular grafts and stent-grafts.
  • Implants: Used to manufacture devices intended for long-term residence in the body, such as heart valve sewing rings, orbital implants, plastic surgery filler materials, and artificial pericardium.
  • Medical Coatings: Leveraging its insulating and non-stick properties, PTFE is coated onto surgical instruments (e.g., high-frequency bipolar coagulation forceps) to enhance surgical safety and device durability.
  • Medical Device Components: Used in the manufacture of components for wound care, respiratory filters, and various medical catheters.
